While regularly scheduled art classes will continue, summer arts camps and special classes are right around the corner! Pre-registration required unless noted…these fill up fast! 


Spiva Center for the Arts

Spiva Center for the Arts Summer 2015Preschool Summer Art Camps (Ages 3-5)
Snacks are provided each day. Minimum of 4 students for classes to hold, except where specified, and maximum of 8. Pre-registration is required. All preschool classes run 10–11:30am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. All preschool art camps cost $50 per child.

Summer Youth Art Camps (Ages 6-12)
Snacks are provided each day. Summer camps tend to fill up, so it is recommended that you preregister. Minimum of 6 students for classes to hold, except where specified, and maximum of 20. Pre-registration is required. All Youth Art Camps run from 12:30–5:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. *please note these camps begin at age 9 for safety reasons

MSSU Jazz Camp

Concerts are free and open to the public

The MSSU Jazz Camp will provide each student with a foundation in the jazz idiom through classes and rehearsals that emphasize improvisation, theory, jazz history, ear training and transcription of solos, melodic patterns, and jazz style and interpretation. Students are encouraged to think creatively and truly dig in and experience the music through active learning, rather than simply practicing patterns out of a book.  The faculty strives not only to mentor these young students, but also to foster a positive learning environment where they aren’t afraid to take risks in their playing and improvising. The MSSU Jazz Camp’s ultimate goal is to make each and every student a better person, a better performer, and to inspire them to carry on the wonderful legacy of the music we call jazz while simultaneously continuing to innovate and seek out new forms of musical expression.

Cost: $150 (Early Bird Registration) – $175 (Extended Registration) (includes tuition, t-shirt, and all camp materials)

Shakespeare Academy (K-12)MOShakes Academy

The Shakespeare Academy is thrilled to partner with Art Feeds as they bring Shakespeare and theatre to young artists. At this day camp, learn the art of storytelling, stage combat, stage design, and acting. It will be a fresh, exciting experience to familiarize students with the timeless exuberance of William Shakespeare. The camp will culminate in a final performance for friends and family.

Joplin Public Library provides this thematic program for children ages 1-5 years.  This is a fun hands-on time for families with busy toddlers and preschoolers! Families will discover specially created “exploration stations” that encourage adult-child play and teach key early literacy skills. Suggested age range: 1-5 years. Teen Department

Teen DepartmentSummer reading program for all ages begins May 31 and ends July 30.

How the Teen Summer Challenge works: Instructions are available at the Teen, Reference & Children’s Desks. The booklet contains 40 challenges. For every challenge you complete, you can enter our weekly prize drawing! Prizes include books, themed prizes, gift certificates to local businesses, etc. When you get your Teen Summer Challenge Booklet, you can get a free library card for the summer. Just take the booklet and a parent/guardian/adult-type-person with you to the Circulation Desk and fill out our form.

Information about the Teen Book Cover Contest: Design a new cover for your favorite book, comic, or manga. Entries open May 31st and close on July 15th at 6 pm. Entries will be judged by Library staff and/or “celebrity” community members. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on July 26th. Please see the flyer in the Teen Department for rules and entry forms.

Camp Wildcat Summer Day Camp (Age 7-12)
8am–Noon | June 14–17 or July 12–July 15
Do you have a young naturalist at home? Help cultivate that interest in nature by sending them to our outdoor summer camp! Led by professional naturalists with over 13 years of day camp experience, we will meet at the Center each morning before we go outdoors to explore various habitats. Each day we’ll learn about a different group of animals: birds, amphibians and reptiles, fish, and insects and other invertebrates. A child to adult ratio of at least 10:1 ensures a safe and educational experience for all.  Children should be in good physical condition and able to hike in summer weather. We will provide a snack or they may bring their own from home. For the convenience of working parents, we will provide supervision from 7:30am–12:30pm. Partial scholarships available from Wild Birds Unlimited based on need.  Let us know if you think you qualify. Cost: $100 per child per week members; $125 per child per week non-members.

Nature’s Artwork Summer Day Camp (Ages 7-12)
8am–Noon | June 14–17 or July 12–July 15
Do you have a young artist at home who also enjoys nature?  Help cultivate their interest by sending them to our art camp!  Led by certified art teacher Anne-Marie Gailey, we meet at the Center each afternoon and use nature as our inspiration to create original pieces of art.  This session will include transforming recycled plastic in awesome insect pins, designing and building a 3-D eco-treehouse model, exploring Chinese brush painting techniques and begin an “Audubon Visual Bird Journal”!  Join our summer Art Camp for this exciting and imaginative adventure! Please wear clothes you can explore art in. Fee includes all art materials, a snack and instructor’s fee. Cost: $125 per child per week (payment by cash or check only to instructor).

Calling all Kids K-12! This summer Joplin Little Theatre and Whitewood Theatrics will be offering four separate weeks of summer workshops. All workshops have morning (9am–Noon) or afternoon (1–4pm) options unless otherwise noted. Each session costs $60. Scholarships are available.

TJ’s Summer Discovery Academy runs from June 15 – August 12 and includes courses in fine arts, theater, and music. Most courses are half-day classes that run a full week – either 9am–Noon or 1–4pm. Some courses are a full day (9am–4pm) and others last two-weeks. In addition to the arts-related courses, TJ’s Summer Discovery Academy offers academic enrichment courses for students in any school and all grades.
