National Poetry Month (NPM) is the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K-12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, bloggers, and, of course, poets marking poetry’s important place in our culture and our lives every April. Connect2Culture, Post Art Library, Pub Hound Press, and Spiva Center for the Arts have partnered to provide an exciting lineup of events to celebrate NPM in Joplin, MO…

Friday, April 1 | National Poetry Month Kick-Off!, All-day throughout Joplin, MO. 
Event organizers will visit the campus of Missouri Southern and other venues throughout Joplin to kick-off National Poetry Month by promoting poetry-related events that will take place in Joplin throughout April.

Thursday, April 7 | Visual Poetry, 5:30–8:30pm at Post Art Library.
Join us during First Thursday Art Walk in the Post Art Library to create a collaborative visual poem with collage. Our visual poetry will collage literary verse with images you select. No experience necessary! All materials provided.

Tuesday, April 12 | Eighth Annual 1,000 Words Event, 6:30pm at Spiva Center for the Arts.
PhotoSpiva 2016 serves as inspiration for the 8th annual 1000 Words event. Writers are invited to pick a photo(s) as a springboard for poetry or prose. Sign up at Spiva by April 10. A public reading will be held Tue, April 12 @ 6:30pm.

Thursday, April 14 | Poetry Wordshop, 7pm at Post Art Library.
Explore the benefits of reading and writing poetry! Learn the basics of getting started as well as tips and tricks to maintain inspiration. Joey Brown will lead this Poetry Wordshop. Joey Brown writes poetry and prose. Her work has appeared in several literary journals including Louisiana Review, The Oklahoma Review, Cybersoleil, The Mid-America Poetry Review, and San Pedro River Review. She has recently been invited to read her work at the Scissortail Creative Writing Festival, The Chikaskia Literary Festival, and the Langdon Review Literary Weekend. Her poetry collection Oklahomaography was published in 2010, and a second collection, Feral Love, will be published later this year. She’s currently working on two prose projects, one of which humorously details her attempts at home renovation. Joey teaches professional and creative writing at Missouri Southern State University. She lives in southwest Missouri with her husband, prose writer Michael Howarth, and their congenial pack of rescue dogs in their somewhat-renovated house.

Thursday, April 21 | Poem in Your Pocket Day, 5:30–8:30pm in Downtown Joplin.
Celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day! Choose a poem and carry it with you to share with others throughout the day. Visit Connect2Culture at 5th & Main Streets during Third Thursday to pick up a special poem for your pocket!

Thursday, April 28 | Poetry In Post, 7pm at Post Art Library.
Joy Dworkin, Dustin Faulstick, Richard Porter, Cody White, and Andrew D. Whitehead will share selections from their own original works, as well as their favorite poets.
